Commission for Alex Warlorn
He wanted Vanilla and Cream emerging from the Roboticizer, the first 'common' Mobians to go through the process.
The lighting in this one required quite a bit of planning, due to all the light sources. Was also nice to add an element of graphic design to the illustration as well (note the logo).
All in all, a fun illustration to work on! ^^
---------Vanilla looked concerned as she watched the doctor examine her daughter Cream, shining the small light into her eyes and away again, observing their reaction. The room they were in was poorly lit, the orange, almost golden daylight creeping in through the living area’s small and only window. Cream sat on an old, tattered couch, the fabric torn and faded from damp and dust, it’s springs complaining, even under the weight of a young child. The doctor sat opposite her on an equally enervated chair, his own aging face and eyes struggling under the available light.
“How have the headaches been?” The doctor asked as Cream lowered her gaze, rubbing her eyes against the uncomfortable bright light.
“They’ve been getting worse, doctor” Vanilla answered. “ She’s still been feeling dizzy and weak, I haven’t been able get her to eat much either and in the past few days she’s been getting a fever.”
The doctor placed his hand over Cream’s pale forehead, her skin warm and clammy, a fever already taking root within her. “ You’re definitely feeling under the weather young lady. Aren’t you?” Cream said nothing, instead nodding her head in response. The doctor finished his examination and stood, helping Cream to her feet. “That’s me all done.”
“You go back to bed now, dear. Mommy needs to speak with the doctor.” Vanilla smiled warmly at her as she sauntered off, arms crossed, hugging herself for warmth.
The two of them waited until Cream left the room and they both heard her bedroom door close from down the corridor. The smile ebbed away from Vanilla’s face as she watched the doctor gather his instruments, placing them in the metal case he had brought with him.
“I’m afraid her radiation sickness is getting worse.” The doctor said somberly. “She’s already showing the later symptoms of the illness. Have you both been taking your Sodium salts?”
“Yes.” Vanilla was still, her eye’s closed as she nodded, trying to keep her composure. “Will she recover?” Vanilla’s voice beginning to tremble. The doctor sighed as he gently shook his head “Medicine is becoming harder to get a hold of, the House of Acorn has shifted it’s manufacturing away from drugs to.. something else, I don’t know.” He found himself unable to keep his gaze on Vanilla as her face grew sad, the notion of losing her daughter beginning to sink in.
“Please...” She whimpered. “I can’t lose her. She’s all I have left. Please, doctor there must be something else. Some other treatment. Anything!”
The doctor was completely helpless to comfort her. “These past few years I’ve had to stand before hundred’s of mothers and tell them that there’s nothing I can do to save their children.” He lowered his head, ashamed. “This world is dying, and as it does so takes us with it, and the innocent are usually the first to be taken.” He lifted his case and turned to leave, the wash of acrid sunlight filling the room as he opened the front door. “I’m so sorry.” The door closed behind him, leaving Vanilla in the gloom.
Cream was curled up in her bed as her mother entered to check on her, the thin olive green blanket tucked tightly around her. Vanilla lay down beside her, bringing her daughter close for extra warmth. Cream stirred, feeling a luke warm drop of water across her cheek, turning to find her mother’s eyes red and tear-filled.
“What’s the matter, mommy?” asked Cream. Vanilla hugged her tightly, kissing the side of her head.
“Nothing, my dear. Everything’s fine.”
At the Prower Medical University in Robotropolis, Tails and a Robian Mileeka entered Sally’s office. The open and sleek room led to a tall window, beyond which was the murky, yet still breathtaking vista of the city. The two so completely disparate, Sally’s pristine workspace against the decaying city around them. Sally stood, gazing outwards, her back to the holographic image of Sonic, his brow showing a frown of frustration, his prosthetic hand clenched.
“Sal, the Southern colonies NEED those supplies! If we don’t get that equipment soon, then people here are gonna start dying!” The hedgehog yelled.
“I’m sorry, Sonic.” Said Sally, her arms crossed. “Not only are power packs and medical supplies in short supply, the Freedom Fighters are more active in those areas, it’s just too risky to transport that much energy.” She turned to face him. “Least it fall into enemy hands.”
Sonic was taken aback by her reply. “Sally! You know some of these people! Personally!! You can’t just leave them to rot like this, just cause a few rebels have popped up here and...”
“NO!” Snapped Sally, before spotting Tails and Mileeka through the hedgehog’s semitransparent form. Sally’s harshness gave way to a vulnerable tone. “Sonic, I... just... We’ll talk later.” Sonic’s image fizzled away revealing the two uneasy looking figures before her. “Yes Tails, what is it?”
Tails stepped forth. “I think we’ve found some ideal candidates for the first batch of conversions.” He handed the glass slate computer to her, which displayed a dossier of Mobian records. Holographic portraits and data shimmered in front of her as she swiped her hand through one record after another. “All have sound personal backgrounds and most are currently suffering from radioactive or toxic exposure. Analysis shows these individuals would be most open to the idea of going through the robotization process.” Sally continued to swipe through the records. “The question remains, who want’s to go first?” Tails continued. Sally stopped at one of the records, her eye’s widening slightly at the young face that appeared in front of her.
Height: 3ft 4in
“I know this girl.. and her mother. Vanilla, isn’t it?” Sally remarked.
Tails nodded. “Yes, the two of them live on the outskirts of the northern precinct. Her mother’s file is attached. The two of them got quite a dose during the last radiation storm two weeks ago.” Sally looked up at Tails.
“You mean she’s?”
Tails sighed “Vanilla is expected to pull through... As for her daughter Cream...” Sally looked down at the young rabbit’s bright eye’s, so full of youth and cheer. She handed the slate back to Tails, a somber yet determined look on her face.
“Proceed with the first batch..Inform all media outlets and project personnel, bring the system online. We’ve waited long enough for this.” Both Tails and Mileeka nodded, smiling at her decision as they turned to leave. “And Tails!” Sally called as she returned to her city vista. “See to it that Cream and her mother are the first ones to enter the Roboticizer. I want the world to watch a mother and her sickly child emerge healthy and reborn.”
Both Cream and her mother stood with the rest of the group, with some one hundred and fifty people gathered in the vast assembly area. Most of them looked extremely ill, with radiation burns, mangy fur, coughing, bleeding, some were barely able to stand.
“Mother, are all these people sick too?” Asked Cream.
“I’m afraid so, my dear.” Vanilla replied, keeping her daughter close.
“What’s going to happen to us? I saw that lady Sally a while ago, and Tails! Are they going to give us all some special medicine? I hope it tastes better than those yucky pills.” Said cream, her illness not having completely dampened her spirit.
“Well, do you remember the person who came to visit us at home yesterday?”
“You looked happy after he left.” Cream said as she heard some commotion from the crowd, Tails and Sally were making their way onto a nearby stage. “But you looked a bit scared as well.” The chatter hushed as Sally address the crowd.
“My friends, welcome! I trust everyone is here and wondering why I’ve summoned you all like this. You all know who I am, but let me also introduce our Chief Technology Officer, Miles Prower, many of you know him simply as Tails.” Sally began to pace across the raised stage. “You all know the hardships the world has thrust upon us, what Dr. Robotnik’s empire left behind after the last war. You’ve all suffered the afflictions the environment has wrought; suffering together through the last ten years; through the radiation storms; through the starvation... through the loss of loved ones.” Sally gestured towards an entrance that opened to the far side of the hall. “But we no longer need suffer like this, through those doors lie the culmination of just over ten years work. A roboticizer technology that Tails here and his team strived to created, something much more advanced than anything Robotnik, or even Sir Charles, could have ever imagined possible.” The crowd turned to view the entrance, muttering as they saw a path light up leading to a small circular platform, which glowed invitingly. “You’ve all seen Mileeka, what she chose to become. You know that she can feel, think and simply be herself again, without worrying about becoming sick.” Sally jumped down from the stage platform, the crowd parting as she walked past, before standing to the side of the entrance, motioning towards the Roboticizer. “You all now have that choice.. No one will stop you should you decide against this, you will be free to leave and take your chances as you are. But if you choose this, I promise that you will never again suffer the ills you carry now.”
The crowd’s mumbling began to grow in intensity, slowly rising into anxiety, soon in danger of becoming panic. Cream and Vanilla drew close to each other, suddenly afraid of the crowd. Cream stared at a very apprehensive Sally, her own face unfazed and curious. Amongst the growing panic, the young rabbit turned to her mother.
“I don’t understand mommy, why is everyone so scared? Don’t they want to be like that nice Mileeka lady?”
Her mother being more concerned with the crowd at this point replied. “They’re scared of going through the process, Cream. They’ve seen the outcome, but they’re not sure about the process. They’re not sure about Princess Sally.”
Cream turned to look back at Sally, who was now joined by Tails, a supporting hand on her shoulder, their worst fears of the public letting their own emotions get the better of them coming to fruition. Cream went to shrug off her mother’s grip, only to be held back even tighter.
“Stay close, Cream!” Her mother barked.
“But mommy! I wanna talk to Princess Sally and Tails!” Cream pleaded. “Please, mommy!” Vanilla remained unsure for a few moments, before finally releasing her hold of her daughter. By this point several members of the group were heading for the exit, Cream slowly left the crowd and ventured towards Sally and Tails.
The crowd fell silent, suddenly becoming fixated on this young girl walking gingerly towards Princess Sally, whose face began to smile warmly as she approached. Cream curtsied as she stood before Sally and Tails, the two of them nodding kindly in response.
“Excuse me Princess Sally...” Said Cream, hesitant to meet Sally’s eyes. “Is this the thing that’s going to make everyone better?”
“Yes.” Said Sally, kneeling down to Cream’s level. “It is.”
“It will make my mother and me not sick anymore?”
“But, what if we end up like those robots that bad doctor made?”
Tails smiled, amused. “You wont.” He said.
Cream’s gaze turned towards the Roboticizer. “We can all be like that nice lady on the TV?”
“Yes, you can!” A voice called. The crowd parted once more to reveal Mileeka’s elegant, Robian form. “You can be as I am. No more sickness, no more pain...” She said as her majestic image approached Cream. “ No more loss.” Mileeka offered Cream her hand, which she took gently. It wasn’t what she expected; her hand was hard like metal, it shone like pearl, but was warm, supple and feminine like her mother’s. It didn’t feel like a robot’s hand. It felt alive.
Cream stood in wonder, her eyes bright with renewed hope. “Did it hurt?” She asked.
Mileeka giggled. “No, my dear. Not in the slightest.”
Cream turned back to her mother, a gleeful smile and look of excitement returned again to her face. “It’s ok mommy! I believe them! If Princess Sally, Tails and the nice Mileeka lady here say so, then it must be true!”
Vanilla joined the four of them, still uncertain, having never been this close to a Robian before. “Are you sure, Cream?”
“Yes! I know I am! We wont be sick anymore and wont have to take those yucky pills ever again!”
Sally, Tails and Mileeka stood before mother and child. “The decision is yours, Vanilla.” Said Tails.
“Alright.” said Vanilla, placing her trust in her daughter.
“Tails, the control room.” Said Sally. “We need to make sure everything goes smoothly.” the two left in preparation.
The crowd behind them make their way slowly towards the entrance, their confidence renewed at this child’s pleas to her mother, and at her mother acceptance. Vanilla took her daughter’s hand as the two of them made their way down towards the roboticizer platform.
“See you on the other side!” called Mileeka after them, as the rest of the crowd followed suit, being led by an uncertain mother and her eager child. As they approached, the platform came to life, a glow of blues, purples and greens surrounding them and a bright flash of light appeared in front of them. The two shielded their eyes, recoiling from the field.
“It’s all right!” Sally’s voice emanated from the control room above. “Just walk into the field!”
As Vanilla and Cream grew closer, they noticed themselves beginning to glow, their clothing disintegrating and drifting away like the leaves of a cherry blossoms in bloom, the two of them locking in embrace as they entered the roboticizer. Cream closed her eye’s as the field activated, unleashing a brilliant white light, what felt like a strong gust of wind suddenly struck the two of them, it held for a few moments. Cream gripped her mother tightly within this maelstrom of light, for fear that she might be pulled away.
Then the wind ceased, the light disappeared and all was still. After a moment the two of them opened their eye’s, Cream looked up at her mother who in turn looked upon her, the two placed a gentle hand on each other’s Robian cheek.
“Cream?” said Vanilla softly.
“Mommy?” Cream replied.
The two smiled at each other as they emerged from the Roboticizer, hand in hand, taking in their new forms. Cream laughed aloud, she didn’t feel sick anymore, the radiation burns on her arms and neck were gone, along with the pain. Cream spotted a nearby camera drone, floating just ahead of them, it’s lens transmitting the images of the two of them to the masses. This child along with her mother, becoming the first of the Robian children.
The first of many.
